Safeguarding of Children in our Church

How did Messy Church Begin?

Messy Church is the brainchild of Lucy Moore and a group of worshippers at St. Wilfred's Church in Portsmouth.  It came out of a desire to reach out to children and families in their parish who were not connecting with church or meeting Jesus in any way.  They decide to develop something for families, something that could connect with parents, grandparents, carers and children in a way that was accessible and gave them an opportunity to meet Jesus in craft activities, worship and a meal together.

What is Messy Church?

If you think that church is boring and irrelevant, think again.  Messy Church is church with a difference.  The emphasis of Messy Church is about learning about God in a fun and creative way, and about families enjoying quality time together.  Messy Church is about having time together to have fun, explore faith, worship God and have a meal.  Messy Church  welcomes everyone, aims to involve everyone, and values everyone.  It is called Messy Church because you get Messy! People arrive and have a choice of craft activities which feed into the theme of the service.  Following a session of crafts and other activities there is the celebration. Then there is food! There is a meal for everyone to enjoy time together before leaving.

Messy Church takes place on the Third Friday of the Month at 3.45pm in the Church Hall.  We have some families who have been with us since we began in 2011.  It has been a delight and a joy to see some of them now helping to plan and lead activities and join the Catering Rota.  We offer a safe space for everyone that is non-judgemental and supportive.

The Holiday Club took place in July and All Hallows held one of the Sessions.   It is a great opportunity to meet people from other churches across the Retford Area and also to go along to their sessions and support them.

I am grateful to Lavinia Swannack who leads the planning and delivery of the sessions, to the team of activity leaders, caterers including those who bake buns and help us clear up. We are delighted that one of our Mums has now joined the catering team rota and plans and delivers a meal for us.

Revd Sue Caddy.

During the year, I have undertaken some DBS applications for both All Hallows and Saint Bartholomew's Churches.  Due to ongoing health issues, I had decided that I would not take on St Michael's as well hence me handing the role over as soon as we can arrange it.
